Joseph Stanley | ParaData

Joseph 'Joey' Stanley served prior to joining the Parachute Regiment with Royal Horse Artillery.

He served at home on AA duties in Derby, then in Dunkirk as a Lewis Gunner and then in North Africa.

Joey was 'taken on strength' 15 February 1944 with The 4th Parachute Bn, B Coy. He was parachute jump trained in Italy. Joey served in Italy, Greece, South of France and Germany. He joined the Reserves 17 February 1948.

It is believed that he then re-joined the army. Given a new service number. This time with The INT Corps and served in Cyprus, Malaysia and Germany.

Cyprus (EOKA Campaign)

A continual round of village cordon and search operations, road blocks, curfews, law enforcement and riot control followed. Operations were directed against terrorist enclaves in the Kyrenian and Troodos Mountains and the Paphos Forest.

Greece (Operation Manna)

One company of the 4th Para Battalion was dropped in high winds at Megara airfield 40 miles from Athens suffering numerous casualties.

Italy

The Italians had capitulated while the force was still at sea. The sinking of HMS Abdiel by a mine in the harbour, however, resulted in the loss of 130 soldiers from 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion including their Commanding Officer.

Malaya

The ‘Emergency’ was the unofficial war conducted against Communist infiltration into Malaya between 1948 and 1956. Jungle areas were dominated by Communist Terrorists ‘CTs’ who press-ganged the local Aboriginal tribes for labour.

Arab intransigence over the surge of Jewish immigration that followed the Holocaust in Europe led to the forming of extreme dissident Zionist groups such as IZL (Irgun Zwai Leumi) and the Stern Gang, all seeking to promote their aims through violence.

Sicily (Operation Husky)

Speed was essential to prevent the consolidation of Italian and German defences facing a rapid pincer movement launched from the west and south east immediately after the amphibious landings. Key bridges and ports were to be captured by airborne assault.

South France (Operation Dragoon)

The airborne assault was mounted alongside five US Parachute Battalions and one US Air Landing Brigade. The 51st US Troop Carrier Wing provided the lift for what was essentially an American-heavy operation.
