Ernest Twell, born in Skellow near Doncaster, was enlisted on January 1944 into the General Service Corps and then posted to The Manchester Regiment.
He soon volunteered for airborne forces and qualified as a military parachutist on course 124 which ran at RAF Ringway in July 1944. He course instructors’ notes state: ‘Pte Twell cheerful and keen, reaction quick, good standard.’
Pte Twell was then posted to the 13th (Lancashire) Parachute Battalion and took part in the Battle of the Bulge, Operation Varsity and the advance to the Baltic.
He then stayed with the battalion to go to the Far East, being promoted to Sergeant.
In Palestine in 1946, where 13th (Lancs) Para Bn was disbanded, Sgt Twell transferred to 1st/6th Queen’s Royal Regiment until demobilisation in 1947.
Ernest married and had two sons and spent the rest of his working life in a foundry.
