47 Air Despatch RCT always played a vital role in air support for the SAS,SBS,and all Para Battalions. Most members wore "wings", and of course the special flash of a Gold Dakota on a blue background representing all despatchers who died on operations. When I served we were based at RAF Lyneham and 47 Squadron RAF flew the C130 (Hercules), having jumps and heavy drops on Medium Stress Platforms (MSP's)with Paras many times into Kievel and other DZ's. Now 47 are at RAF Brize Norton along with the Number 1 Jump School but are now RLC after the Army re-jigged itself.
