William Spencer was the son of Frank and Catherine Spencer, of Wirksworth, Derbyshire. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Sergeant Spencer successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 91 from 11 to 26 November 1943. His course report stated “Very good course, keen, enthusiastic and efficient.” He was posted to Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to 9th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Overlord (D day landings).
Sgt Spencer was killed in action on 10 June 1944, and is commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial to the missing.
