Staff Sergeant William A Smallwood

William Albert Smallwood was the husband of Annie Jane Smallwood, of Llangybi, Cardiganshire. He enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Staff Sergeant Smallwood successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to A Squadron, 1st Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

S/Sgt Smallwood was killed in action on 24 September 1944, aged 27, and was given a field burial in the garden of the Ter Horst family, Benedendorpsweg, opposite Arnhem church, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 6 August 1945.
