Private William McInnes

William McInnes was the son of William and Sarah McInnes, of Glasgow; husband of Annie McInnes, of Townhead, Glasgow, he enlisted in the Cameron Highlanders and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private McInnes successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 114, from 1 to 12 May 1944. His course report stated “Very good performer, cheerful, and reliable”. He was posted to 12th (10th Battalion, the Green Howards [Yorkshire Regiment]) Bn., the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte McInnes was killed in action on 22 August 1944, age 29, and was given a field burial at Pont Leveque and re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France on 26 October 1945.
