Rifleman William A McBurney

William Ashwood McBurney was the son of Joseph and Annie McBurney, of Bambridge, County Down, Northern Ireland, he enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and volunteered for airborne forces.

Rifleman McBurney successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Rfn McBurney was killed in action on 9 July 1944, age 23, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
