William Miller Gourlay was the son of James and Jane Gourlay, of Coatbridge, Scotland, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces
Rifleman Gourlay successfully completed glider training and was posted to 1st (Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).
Rfn Gourlay was killed in action on 4 April 1945, aged 19, and was given a field burial at Wissingen, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 17 May 1947.
