Private William H Mitchell

William Henry Mitchell was the son of Thomas and Jane Mitchell, of Lancaster and the husband of Mary Mitchell. He enlisted into the Highland Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Mitchell successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Mitchell was killed in action on 24 September 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial near the junction of Oranjeweg and Bothaweg, Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 28 August 1945.
