Corporal William C Mayhew

William Charles Mayhew was the son of William Charles and Ethel Evelyn Mayhew; husband of Ivy Blanche Ever Mayhew, of Raynes Park, Surrey, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Corporal Mayhew successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 77, from 9 to 18 August 1943. His course report stated “Very good man in section, a good type”. He was posted to A Company, 9th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Cpl Mayhew was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 22, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
