Private Wilfred G J Smith

Wilfred Gordon John Smith was the son of Wilfred and May Smith, of Washford, Somerset. He enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry, and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Smith successfully completed glider training and was posted to Headquarters 1st Airborne Division, Defence Platoon, Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Smith was killed between 25 and 26 September 1944, aged 21, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
