Private Wilfred G J Smith

Wilfred Gordon John Smith, son of Wilfred and May Smith, of Washford, Somerset, enlisted into The Somerset Light Infantry.

Private Smith volunteered for airborne forces and served with 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. He was subsequently attached to HQ 1st Airborne Division, Defence Platoon and took part in the Battle of Arnhem, during Op Market Garden.

Pte Smith died between 25/26 September 1944, aged 21 years old. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Memorial of the Missing at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, near Nijmegen.
