Westby Thorp enlisted into 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment in January 1942 and went to India in August that year.
He volunteered for airborne forces in June 1945 and after training joined The 15th (British) Parachute Battalion.
Pte Thorp returned to England in November 1945 and was posted to Airborne Forces Depot briefly before returning to 1st Battalion North Staffordshire until demob in 1947
