George Smyth enlisted into the Parachute Regiment in April 1989 and completed P Coy with 548 (Rhine) Platoon, Passing Out on 10 November 1989.

Private Smyth was posted to the 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA) and served with 1 PARA until 1998.

In 1998 Corporal Smyth was posted to The Infantry Training Centre Catterick (ITC Catterick) as an Instructor in Para Coy. After his two year posting he returned to 1 PARA in Dover.

Sergeant Smyth was posted to the Reserve Training Mobilisation Centre (RTMC) in Nottingham as an instructor for reservists deploying on operations to Iraq and Afghanistan in 2005.

Colour Sgt Smyth returned to 1 PARA in 2007 and completed 22 years’ service before leaving the Regiment in 2011.
