W Hellyar enlisted into the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry and later volunteered for airborne forces.
He qualified as a military parachutist on course 50 which ran at RAF Ringway from 8 to 22 February 1943 and served in A Company, 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion. The course report reads ‘L/Cpl Hellyar: Very keen, shown great courage. Make good paratroop.’
L/Cpl ‘Monty’ Hellyar was wounded in Normandy.
