Vincent Desmond McManus was the son of Thomas and Marie McManus, of Worcester. He enlisted in the Royal Engineers and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Staff Sergeant McManus successfully completed his Glider Pilot training and was posted to A Squadron, 1st Wing, 2nd Flight, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
S/Sgt McManus was killed in action on 23 September 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial in an isolated group of graves in front of the Tafelberg Hotel, Oosterbeek. He was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 3 September 1945.
