Thomas Whittaker was born in Warrington and worked there as a steel worker when he enlisted into the South Lancashire Regiment in 1939.

He volunteered for airborne and qualified as a military parachutist on course 109 which ran at RAF Ringway from 27 March to 7 April 1944. The course reports states that this course took place under extreme of wind and ground conditions, and the instructors’ report states ‘

After qualifying Pte ‘Tom’ Whittaker joined the 10th Parachute Battalion and jumped on the second lift near Arnhem under German fire on 18th September. The10th Parachute Battalion fought to virtual annihilation in the besieged Oosterbeek 1st Airborne Division perimeter.

Pte Whittaker was taken Prisoner of War and sent to Stalag IVB Muhlberg nr Dresden and after liberation was demobbed in July 1946.
