Private Thomas H Johnson

Thomas Harry Johnson was the son of Henry and Edith Johnson; husband of Gladys May Johnson, of Driffield, Yorkshire, he enlisted into The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Johnson successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 88, from 18 to 30 October 1943. His course report stated “Quiet and slightly nervous.” He was posted to 13th (2/4th Battalion The South Lancashire Regiment) Bn., The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Johnson was killed in action on 6 June 1944, aged 29, and was given a field burial near Ranville and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 28 August 1945.
