Thomas Edward Stanley, son of Thomas and Florence Stanley, of Meols, Hoylake, Cheshire, enlisted into The Border Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.
Private Stanley successfully completed his Glider training and was posted to 16 Platoon, C Company 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Pte Stanley was known to have been killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 21. He was originally buried as an unknown British soldier but recent research has identified his grave and a new headstone was dedicated to him at a ceremony in September 2016.
