My Dad, 5111782 Cpl Thomas Davis, took part in Operation Overlord and was wounded twice. The first was a minor sharpnel wound to his knee which the surgeon said he wouldn't remove because it wasn't causing any problems. He carried that bit of shrapnel in his knee forever after. The second was again caused by shrapnel and was more extensive, including large flesh wounds to the back of his right shoulder, arm, torso, buttock and thigh, and one "through and through" to his shoulder. He was sent to hospital in West Bromwich where he was nursed by a pretty young redhead from Galway, who was my mom. She told me that she had to paint iodine on his wounds, including his backside. This, she said, reminded her of some sdvaice her mom gave her, which was that "You always see the best side of your husband before you marry him".
