Private Thomas Casson

Thomas Casson was the adopted son of Sarah Elizabeth Nicholson, of Broughton-in-Furness, Lancashire, he enlisted in the Border Regiment and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Casson successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 92, from 17 November to 3 December 1943. His course report stated, “Confident and cheerful, a capable performer”. He was posted to A Company, 2 Platoon, 8th (Midlands) Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Casson was killed in action on 2 July 1944, aged 26, and was given a field burial near Bavent and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 25 October 1945.
