Lance Corporal Thomas Brown

{ Tommy }

22 Dec 2009

LCpl 'Tommy' Brown served with 1 PARA Special Forces Support Group. He was killed on 22 December 2009 by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a foot patrol 1km south of Sangin in the Helmand Province. He was aged 25.

The MOD described him as “a dynamic, optimistic and talented soldier and sportsman for whom no challenge was too great”.

A spokesman said at the time of his death:

"He relished responsibility and was never found wanting. In all that he did, he displayed the easy confidence of a natural leader".

"His cheeky grin and easy wit were never far from the surface, especially when things were tough. "

"He died as he lived, leading from the front: the only place that someone like Tommy knew."

A regiment spokesman said:

"He gave his life for his comrades and the Parachute Regiment, both of which meant so much to him. We are deeply honoured to have served alongside him."

His funeral service was conducted at Glasgow Cathedral and was attended by around 800 mourners, before being cremated at Maryhill.
