Thomas Blackmore, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Blackmore and husband of Gladys Blackmore, of New Malden, Surrey enlisted into The Royal Artillery and then volunteered for the airborne forces.
Lance Bombardier Blackmore successfully undertook Glider training and was posted to 2 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery. He took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including L/Bdr Blackmore.
L/Bdr Blackmore died at sea on 10 September 1943, aged 28.
He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
