Private Stanley E Gater

Stanley Ernest Gater was the son of Ernest and Hilda Gater, of Rugeley, Staffordshire. He enlisted in the South Staffordshire Regiment and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Gater successfully completed his glider training and was posted to Support Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Gater was killed in action on 20 September 1944, aged 25, when a shell hit a handcart loaded with mortar bombs near the Municipal Museum on Utrechtseweg at Arnhem, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
