Private Sidney Arthur Craig

  • Italy Star medal

Sidney, or Arthur Craig as he was usually called, was born in Bilston in 1923, the youngest son of Jasper Craig and Florence Humphries. He had an elder brother, Thomas William Craig, and two sisters Florence (known as Rose) and Minnie. Unfortunately, Florence committed suicide in 1926 - drowning herself in the underfloor water cistern in the family home early one morning. A stepmother followed a year or two later who the children generally did not get on with but who was the only mother Arthur new.

It is not known when Arthur joined the South Staffs but we do know that he died on 9 July 1943 in a glider landing into Sicily. He has no grave but is commemorated on the Cassino memorial panel 8. Arthur was a Private in the 2nd (Airborne) Bn. - South Staffordshire Regiment when he died. His service number was 4928295. Arthur was just 19 when he died.
