Lance Corporal Rupert O Newall

16 Jun 1921 - 24 Mar 1945

Rupert Oscar Newall was the son of Frank and Ethel May (Knowles) Newall, of Northwich, Cheshire; husband of Winifred Norah (Dyer) Newall. They married in October 1944 in Salisbury. Rupert enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

Lance Corporal Newall successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 71, from 5 to 17 July 1943. His course report stated “Exceptionally keen and hardworking”. He was posted to 6th (Airborne) Divisional Provost Company, attached to 5 Para Brigade, Corps of Military Police, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

L/Cpl Newall was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 23, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 12 November 1946.
