Private Ronald A F Lansdowne

Ronald Albert Frank Lansdowne was son of Ernest & Alice Lansdowne, of Wells in Somerset.

He originally enlisted into the Somerset Light Infantry. Later he transferred to the 2nd Airborne Battalion, The Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He became part of the Defence Platoon for the Head Quarters and took part in the Battle for Arnhem during Operation "Market-Garden", 17th - 25th September 1944.

His body was recovered from the River Lek near Vianen on the 27th September 1944. It is believed that during the withdrawal across the river on the night of the 25-26th September he drowned.

21 year old Private Lansdowne was buried at Hagensten by the side of the brick works chimney stack about 100 yards from the south bank of the River Lek. 

He was reburied in the Amersfoot General Cemetery.
