Robert William Hayton was the son of Jack and Annie Hayton and the husband of Minnie Hayton, of North Woolwich. He enlisted into The Royal Army Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.
Driver Hayton was posted to 253 (Airborne) Composite Company, RASC, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Dvr Hayton was killed, along with the eight other crew members, when Stirling EF-298 of 570 Squadron RAF, based at Harwell, was shot down by Flak and crashed in woods east of Panoramahoeve on 23 September 1944, aged 22. He was found in or near the aircraft and given a field burial by local Air Raid Wardens in the Onder de Bomen General Cemetery and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 22 August 1945.
