Private Robert Thomson

Robert Thomson was the son of John and Janet (Douglas) Thomson, of Hawick, Roxburghshire, he enlisted in the Royal Scots and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Thomson successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 81 from 6 to 16 September 1943. His course report stated, “Tends to resist landing”. He was posted to 7th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (‘D’ Day landings) Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte Thomson was killed in action on 29 March 1945, aged 23, during operation Varsity and was given a field burial at Gesher, Germany and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany, on 29 April 1947.
