Robert Ferguson was the son of William and Margaret Ferguson and the husband of Mary Ferguson, of Dalry, Kirkcudbrightshire. He enlisted in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers and volunteered for Airborne forces.
Sergeant Ferguson successfully completed his glider training and was posted to C Company, 7th (Airborne) Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
Sgt Ferguson was killed in action between 20 and 22 September 1944, aged 31, by a mortar burst in the area of Bothaweg and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
