Richard Mansell Sharpe, M.B., enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment before transferring to the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) and later volunteered for airborne forces.
Captain Sharpe attended parachute course 29 at RAF Ringway from 28 September to 3 October 1942 and was posted to 127 Parachute Field Ambulance, RAMC.
He later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Capt Sharpe.
Capt Sharpe died at sea on 10 September 1943.
He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
