Private Richard A Dalzell

Richard Andrew Dalzell, son of Alfred and Jane Dalzell, of Kendal, Westmorland, enlisted into the Somerset Light Infantry and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Dalzell successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway, on course number 41 from 3 to 17 December 1942. His course report simply stated “Good”. He was posted to S Company, 6 Platoon, 1st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in the Italian campaign and also Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Dalzell was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 22, and was given a field burial by the Dutch Red Cross in the grounds of the St Elisabeth Hospital at Oosterbeek, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 21 February 1946.
