Sergeant Reginald G Hill

{ Reg }

Reginald G Hill listed in the Glider Pilot Regiment Transfer and Enlistment Book 02/65 probably served with Number 1 Flight.

On 'D.Day' he flew as a second pilot. The first pilot was 90573 S/Sgt R Barratt. They flew out from RAF Harwell in Horsa glider C/N 116. This glider was part of Op. 'Mallard'. Reg was part of the second lift, on the evening of 6 June 1944. His glider contained members of 2nd Bn The Ox and Bucks Light Infantry. They landed successfully in Landing Zone W, west of the Caen canal and river Orne bridges.

On Op 'Market' he was still serving with 'A' Sqn, and still a second pilot. Reg was was probably still with first pilot S/Sgt R Barratt. Unfortunately the details of the glider number, lift, landing zone is not known. However it is known that the glider landed safely.

During the battle for Arnhem he was listed as missing on 25 September 1944. His mother received a letter informing her of this from Lt Col I A Murray. He was taken prisoner and held in Stalag IIB, his POW number was 118254. Later he was moved to Stalag VIIIC, where he was able to write letters home.
