Corporal Raymond Griffiths

Called up in February 1942, trained at Gallowgate Camp, Richmond, Yorkshire. Posted to the 10th Battalion The Green Howards and then transferred to the 12th Yorkshire Parachute Battalion mid 1943. On the 6th June 1944 took part in the Normandy landing operation around Ranville, Breville and Le Mesnil, the returned to UK in August. In December 1944 left UK for Belgium (Ardennes Offensive)operated around Namur, Givet and Dinant. January 1945 operated in Holland around small town of Barlow on river Maas. In April 1945 advanced over Elbe to area around Wismar on the Baltic Coast, left Germany early June for UK. Late June Battalion sailed for India with 5th Parachute Brigade based Kalyun Camp, Bombay. Took part in landing on Malayan coast and the Port Swettenham area, then sailed to occupy Singapore. Late 1945 sailed for Java operated in areas around Batavia and Semerang. Early 1946 returned to Singapore and occupied barracks around Changi Prison. Left Singapore mid 1946 aboard liner Mauritania for UK and demobilisation.
