Private Peter Gathard

Peter Gathard, son of Albert and Kathleen Gathard, of Battersea, London, enlisted into the Royal Army Service Corps and then volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Gathard successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Kabrit, Egypt, and was posted to S Company, 11th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Gathard died of wounds whilst a prisoner of war on 1 October 1944, aged 21. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Groesbeek Memorial.
