Private Patrick W Welsh

Patrick William Welsh was the son of William and Beatrice Welsh, of Aston, Birmingham. He enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for airborne forces.

His brother, James Welsh, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales’s Own) was killed in action on 22 March 1941, aqed 25, at Keren, Eritrea. Private Welsh successfully completed his parachute training at RAF Ringway on course number 106, from 6 to 16 March 1944. His course report stated "Intelligent and keen, confident and able parachutist".

He was posted to A Company 3rd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem). Pte Welsh was killed in action on 19 September 1944, aged 19, and was given a field burial 100 yards west of the Hartenstein Hotel, Oosterbeek, and was reinterred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 10 September 1945.
