Lieutenant-Colonel Patrick EY Dawson

Patrick Edmund Yelverton Dawson. Born 29 January 1920 was a member of The Lancs Fus. 2-Lt. 3/7/39.
2nd/Lieut. P.E.Y. Dawson was reported as wounded in action on the 26 May 1940, in France, whilst serving with the 2nd Bn, The Lancashire Fusiliers.
This battalion served in the 11th Infantry Brigade, 4 th Infantry Division. They were sent overseas in October 1939 to join the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). The 2nd Battalion fought against the German Army in the battles of Belgium and France, until being forced to retreat to Dunkirk and were evacuated back to the United Kingdom, where they stayed until late 1942, anticipating a German invasion.

In June 1942, the 11th Brigade, of whom the 2nd Bn, The Lancashire Fusiliers were a part, was transferred to the newly created 78th Infantry Division. They then served in the final stages of the North African Campaign, in Tunisian, where the 78th ‘Battleaxe’ Infantry Division gained an excellent reputation, with battles at Medjez El Bab, in Sicily, and the Italian Campaign (as part of the Gothic Line), where they took part in the final offensive in April 1945.

By 1951 he was a Major and serving on the Airborne Forces Recruiting Team. His Para Cse is at RAF Ringway - B182 (post war course, initials recorded as PNY).  Later he became  Lt Col PEY Dawson 2nd Para Bn and then 2nd/3rd (Depot) Para Bn. He retired from the Army, and then became secretary Army Rugby Union. Lived in Farnham, the Aldershot.
