Patrick Joseph Donoghue enlisted at Birmingham into The Parachute Regiment in August 1974 and was posted to the 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA).

In 1975 whilst with 1 PARA he served in Malaya and Northern Ireland on Operation Banner and on Ex Jabberwocky.

In 1977 he transferred to The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), he saw active service again in Northern Ireland, on Operation Corporate (the Falklands), Operation Granby (Gulf) and served with 10 (Airborne) Workshop REME 10 AB Workshop REME in the 1980s.

Having also served in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Kenya and the USA, Warrant Officer I Donoghue retired in August 1997.
