Private Norman Hammersley

18 Dec 1912 - 24 Mar 1945

Norman Hammersley was the son of Joseph and Catherine Hammersley, of Lostock Hall, Lancashire. He is shown on the 1939 register as a Railway Labourer, he enlisted in the Welch Regiment and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Hammersley successfully completed glider training and was posted to 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, and took part in Operation Varsity (Rhine Crossing).

Pte Hammersley was killed in action on 24 March 1945, aged 32, and was given a field burial at Hamminkeln, Germany, and was re-interred to Reichswald Forest War Cemetery on 23 April 1947.
