Norman Arthur Dougan from County Armagh, the son of Arthur and Sarah Elizabeth Dougan, of Lower Glenanne, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, he enlisted into the Royal Artillery. He volunteered for airborne forces and following in the footsteps of his brother Robert.
Private Dougan qualified as a military parachutist on course 124 which ran at RAF Ringway in July 1944. He course instructors’ notes state: ‘Pte Doughan [sic] satisfactory, reactions good, uncoordinated’
Private Norman Dougan jumped into Arnhem on Operation Market Garden on 18 September 1944. He brother Pte Robert Dougan served with to the 1st Parachute Battalion and jumped into Arnhem on 17 September and was killed in action the same day.
Pte Norman Dougan was injured but managed to withdraw across he Rhine river during the night of 25/26 September.
Norman Dougan emigrated to Australia, where he died in January 1988.
