Private Neil Gallacher

18 Sep 1944

Neil Gallacher, son of Neil and Helen Gallacher, of Linlithgow, West Lothian, enlisted into The Scots Guards and volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Gallacher successfully completed both Glider training and then parachute training on course number 27 at RAF Ringway on 14 to 24 September 1942 and was posted to the 1st (Airborne) Battalion, The Border Regt. He took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Pte Gallacher was killed in action on 18 September 1944, aged 27. He received a field burial behind the Paasberg School, Oosterbeek and was re-interred in Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 10 September 1945.
