Michael Homer | ParaData

Michael Homer enjoyed a lengthy Airborne career with The 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment (1 PARA), serving with the unit for twenty three years.

During his service, he rose through the ranks to Colour Sergeant, serving for much of his time with the Mortars and took part on deployments overseas, including Aden in 1967 through to Hong Kong in 1980.

C/Sgt Homer finally left 1 PARA in 1988.

Aden

After receiving news in January 1967 that two terrorist groups - the Federation for the Liberation of South Yemen (FLOSY) and the National Liberation Front (NLF) - were vying for power in Aden, an emergency operational tour was ordered by the CO of 1 Para, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Walsh.

Hong Kong

The emergency deployment was authorised in order to provide the resident Gurkha battalion with some much-needed respite, and 1 PARA arrived at Kai Tak Airport, Hong Kong on 3 February 1980 in bitter cold.
