Melvin Cyril Middleton was the son of Mary Middleton, of Kenora, Ontario. He enlisted in Royal Winnipeg Rifles on 13 June 1940. He was 6’, 156 lbs, Medium complexion, Blue eyes, Brown hair and with 20/20 vision.

He volunteered for Airborne forces and transferred to 1st Canadian Parachute battalion on 23 August 1942, qualified as a parachutist on 12 December 1942 at Fort Benning, Georgia, USA.

He arrived in England on 28 July 1943, was promoted to Sergeant on 20 November 1943, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Sergeant Middleton and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion jumped into Normandy on the night of 5/6 June 1944. He died of wounds on 29 June 1944, aged 29, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
