Lance Bombardier Lionel G H Ryden

Lionel George Henry Ryden was the son of George and Shelagh Ryden, of Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Lance Bombardier Ryden successfully completed glider training and was posted to C Troop, 1 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

L/Bdr Ryden is known to have been killed along Utrechtseweg, somewhere between Wolfhezerweg and Koude Herberg on 20 September 1944, aged 21. He was with a reconnaissance group, driving a jeep towing a 6 pounder gun, when he was hit in the chest by machine gun fire from a German armoured car. He died sitting in the driver’s seat of his jeep, being the only casualty of the group, and is commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial to the missing.
