Private Kenneth S Gillum

Kenneth Sidney Gillum was the son of Sidney Julius and Dorothea Gillum, of Reigate, Surrey, he enlisted in the General Service Corps and volunteered for Airborne forces.

Private Gillum successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringwy on course number 81, from 6 to 16 September 1943. His course report stated “Worked hard and intelligently, a little nervous landing”. He was posted to HQ Platoon, 22nd Independent Company, The Parachute Regiment, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Pte Gillum was killed in action on 9 June 1944, aged 20, and was given a field burial at Breville and was re-interred to Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France, on 5 July 1945.
