Private Kenneth Dawson

Kenneth Dawson the son of Mrs A Dawson, of Milnrow, Lancashire, enlisted in the Lancashire Fusiliers and transferred to 10th Battalion The Royal Welch Fusiliers. He later volunteered for airborne forces.

Private Dawson undertook parachute training on No 59 Training Course at RAF Ringway, which ran from 5 to 16 April 1943 and was then posted to 6th (Royal Welch) Parachute Battalion.

He later took part in the amphibious landings in Italy in September 1943, on board a mine layer, HMS Abdiel. Unfortunately, HMS Abdiel struck a mine in Taranto Harbour causing significant casualties and loss of life, including Pte Dawson.

Pte Dawson died at sea on 10 September 1943.

He is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
