Company Sergeant Major Joseph B Lee

Joseph Bernard Lee was the son of Walter Lee and the husband of Marie Lee. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery and volunteered for airborne forces.

Company Sergeant Major Lee successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to E Squadron, 2nd Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

CSM Lee’s Horsa glider (CN 221) landed in the trees, near Landing Zone S (north west of Wolfheze) on 17 September 1944, fatally injuring the pilots. CSM Lee died instantly, aged 27, and was buried by local Air Raid Wardens in the Onder de Bomen General Cemetery at Renkum, he was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
