Sergeant John Turl

John Turl was the son of Arthur and Lily Turl and the husband of Winifred Turl. He was a member of the National Fire Service (an exempt occupation), but enlisted in the Gloucestershire Regiment, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Sergeant Turl successfully completed his glider pilot training and was posted to E Squadron, 2nd Wing, The Glider Pilot Regiment, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).

Sgt Turl was killed in action on 25 September 1944, aged 25, and was given a field burial on the Hemelse Berg estate, and was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 27 April 1948.
