John Thomas Frederick Newby was the son of Thomas and Flora Newby. He enlisted in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, transferred to the Corps of Military Police and volunteered for airborne forces.
Lance Corporal Newby successfully completed his glider training and was posted to 4 Section, 1 (Airborne) Divisional Provost Company, Corps of Military Police, and took part in Operation Market Garden (Arnhem).
L/Cpl Newby died of wounds on 26 September 1944, aged 24, and was buried in the grounds of the Arnhem Municipal Hospital, he was re-interred to Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery on 24 August 1945.
