Gunner John Sykes

19 Aug 1944

John Sykes was the son of George and Gladys Sykes, of Sheffield, he enlisted in the General Service Corps, and volunteered for airborne forces.

Gunner Sykes successfully completed parachute training at RAF Ringway and was posted to 3 Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery, Royal Artillery, and took part in Operation Overlord (Normandy).

Gnr Sykes was killed in action on 19 August 1944, aged 20, and was buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
